SteveUK28: Camponotus substitutus (19. Sep 2008 11:07)

Hey guys,
I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with these ants? More specificly how far they will scout? Only asking as this morning i found one of my workers in my kitchen, and i keep my ants in my room.. upstairs. So it travelled a fair old way... They are gettin plenty of food, and have fresh water and sugar/honey water.... Any reason why they would go that far away with such a small colony??

Anyway.. Enjoy the pics :)

Aehm why you dont have a escape protection?
They are just anxious to spread. Because they can move very quick, they can scout large areas with a low number of workers.

ehm ... check your calender ... 1st of April is in about half year ...

or do you really mean it and you have an open test tube lieing around in your room? #-o

Any reason why they would go that far away with such a small colony??
Because they are looking for a better place to make their nest.
Get them an escape-prove Arena. Until then close the test tube!

lol the test tube is normaly in an icecream container.. which does have PTFE around the sides..

ptfe is not much effective when you got it on box badly :P ... better to get on it some glass - it also keep wet inside ;)

JimmyVe: Re: Camponotus substitutus (19. Sep 2008 17:01)

They can scout very far. Like most species do. I use PTFE and a lid to keep them inside. (these species and most of my other ants). ;)

SteveUK28: Re: Camponotus substitutus (19. Sep 2008 18:15)

lol i dont do lids that much.. but i think i may have to start now.. i'll order myself some more perspex and cut it up to size :) :drink06:
