Themnothorax nylanderi dont grow large ant dude, max around 200 ants, to be honest, they will live their entire lives happily in a test tube

look miszt, i know they only have max at the most a few hundred workers in one colony. but it is better to have them in a more natural enviroment with some acorns/bark or a y-tong at the least(somthing which they can move around more in, not suomthing massive but somthing that is not the size of the testube or 2 if u get wot i am saying). not only for the colony itself but for people like us who like to view their behavier etc. they will live happily in a testube, i strongly disagree with u. they should be able to explore more than just in a testube u know. a testube is not ideal for them it is ment temperely to the colony gets a bit bigger in size or just for a few weaks, few months at the most really so.... in steve's case better for him to move them out soon,(few weaks or somthing) as he has quite a large colony. although they may apear to be quite happy in a testube(to u miszt) u cant really tell but, it is much better for the colony and us if they have more space to move around in. a life in a testube is a very sad life indeed miszt. as it is plain an it does not have stuff for them to explore such as other materials and plants and things. just bear this in mind :thumright:

Ant dude, I wonder when was the last time you asked an Ant what it 'liked'? ;)

Natrual looking setups are purly for our own benifit and enjoyment, an Ant does not care whether it lives in a glass tube or a wooden block, as long as it has all the variables needed for it to sustain its colony in full health

If you had paid even the slightest bit of attention to any of my diary threads, you would realize that natrual setups are my speciality ;) rather than going off half cocked because you like to be confrontational

Please dont patronize me, I dont appriciate it, I've been keeping various animals longer than you have been alive!

you do have a habbit of being patronizing, pherhaps it is not intentional, in which case, be a little bit more carefull about how you speak, remeber that on a forum we do not have all the visual communication that allows us to interprete what people say correctly, so its easy to come accross in a negative way

miszt, most species dont seem to care i know. but its better seeing them with bark and that. it is more enjoyable seeing how the ants react to things put around there nest like: with niger say if u put grass seeds near them they would move them around to there nest entrances(usually from wot i have seen) and there are many more more examples with other spoecies and different things with ants!!!

i have seen/read a lot of your posts such as your diary threads, an i would agree u put a lot of thinking into it( so it appears) such as your designs and other stuff.

sorry miszt if thats the way it came accross, as me being horrible but i was not meaning to be like this. we gotta stop do this argueing buisness lol( i have lol) anyway lets leave it now, we both have different views on the subject so its up to steve to decide which he will do :)

miszt i find u are also are very rude to me back so like i said best to leave this alone now :thumright:

i dont think i am that rude like u say :?:

Well... I must say, i keep about all of my species in a y-tong nest, this is not a natural area for the ants but it is the easiest way to keep the nest moist (and dry on some spaces) and to keep it clean. I also have sand nest and i find it harder to keep them clean. About what the ants like, if i'm not mistaken, no animal likes to be in captivity so, as long if we give them what they need i think they are "happy".

That said. Now back on topic. (more posts about this and i'm closing this threat !)

@SteveUK28: i think its best to give them a little out world, connect the two tubes to it and wait until they move. If the new tube is better for them i'm sure they will move.

Jimmy cheers bud.. Just wondering but how can i make a basin... Escape Proof as ive seen this little blighters escape twice already lol.. they r true masters of escaping :P
Would Vaseline do the trick?

miszt: (30. Dez 2007 20:15)

Vaseline works great with these ants :)

SteveUK28: (30. Dez 2007 21:28)

ok ive just read somewhere that u can use hand cream???? any1 tried this?? and would it/will it work???

miszt: (31. Dez 2007 01:56)

No, woudlnt recomend it, due to the random chemicals that turn up in them

JimmyVe: (1. Jan 2008 18:22)

In deed i would also rather use Vaseline than hand cream.
PRFE works perfect also.

SteveUK28: (1. Jan 2008 20:03)

Yup i now do totally agree vaseline works great.. Somehow one of the ants got out tho.. dunno how.. past the vaseline.. bit mad.. i had taken out the orginal test tube they came in.. a few hours later i notice that there is an ant crawling about in there lol.. Dam they r good.. He must have been on the test tube or somat.. cos the vaseline is def alllll around the basin...
