it is very difficult to be able to get the right conditions for mating, like nepenthus said most males and queena fly high to mate, so im not sure if it is possible, but i wish you all fhe luck.

In my experience it is very hard to get the right conditions. Some species are much easier than other ones.
I've managed to simulate the conditions that they like to begin the mating flight several times, getting the temp inside the basin to 27 degrees with very bright light for about 5 hours, then letting the tank cool down slowly by moving the lamp away a bit, once the tank reaches 20 degrees they start to come out, and climb to the highest points of the nest and take off....but at the moment theres no where for them to go, most of the males have died now anyway, possibly all, the queens are still there, so will give it a go next year with the big tank
the queens that were not fertilised most likely become large workers to help around the colony, unless your workers kill them.

Colony is doing great :D quiet a few of the smaller workers have died in the last few weeks, but theres plenty of new pups developing and lots have hatched
they are hungry little things, any cricket i put in the basin is devoured within an a few hours, often with 10 workers pulling at it in diffrent directions.
They seem to love small moths aswel, a little sadistic i know, but i usualy remove the wings and leave it for them alive, as I like to see them behave as they would in the wild, they will happily kill a small moth in groups of 3-4, sumtimes they will drag it bak to the nest still alive and a small swarm of ~10-15 ants will 'jump' it and kill it, very suprised by this behaviour tbh, I had thought they where timid ants, but it seems not if they recon they can kill something!
these guys are going into hibernation now :) colony is at least 100 workers now, quiet a few have died off, i guess they are probly the original generations from the queen, took the oppertunity of hibernation to move them back into a test tube, for sum reason they really love test tubes lol i have a new setup planned for them next year, as the current one wasnt really very good for watching them :) pics will come soon once i've made it, but i wont be putting them into it until spring
sounds like everything is going well for you miszt lets hope that your colony survives hibernation.

Hi Guys... recieved my colony yesterday.. however the test tube they come in is empty.. im connected a new one.. but they dont seem interested in moving at all.. All they seem to do is send workers out exploring for food.. i did put some honey in there which they loved.. and some almost drown in it till i rescued them ive now put a bit of cotton wool there for the honey to soak up into.. now they cant drown.. Also tried puttin a live fruit fly in there.. since then they dont even go in the new test tube.. which i thought was strange.. so ive removed it for now hopin they will return.. Any idea how i can get them to move... Ive now made the new tube very dark n left them out in the light.. Ohh and its pretty much a full colony.. around 100 workers.. 1 queen and a stack of eggs.. Any help would be much appreciated guys.. Hope u all had a great xmas :D
@ steveuk28: mate check your messages i have suggested somthings which u could do :) rember if they wanna move they will. i have a question though for u: are u planning on putting them somwhere i.e a basin etc? try a small/ cut in half acorn. i wound'nt false them to move though, as espially with ants who are quite small like these...i did find them quite bad movers but if u put somthing better/bigger for a big colony that u have then then thay will move. so try some bark or somthing anway :)
good luck on these steve :thumright:
x mas was good, but usually is every year lol. i am still waiting for my order, as i missed in on friday so the thing said they will deliver 2moz so hopefully someone recives them(me) :P
Themnothorax nylanderi dont grow large ant dude, max around 200 ants, to be honest, they will live their entire lives happily in a test tube
