miszt: My Pheidole pallidula Colony (17. Aug 2007 11:00)

My Pallidula colony is now setup in their nu Panoramic-Farm-Basin (30x20x10), I choose that one as these guys grow very fast and into very big colonys, so hopefully this tank will last at least ~2years (equivilant to 100cm x 10cm farm)

The sand is a mix of 25% Loam, 25% white sand & 50% yellow sand, theres about 1cm of Clay agregate on the bottom of the farm, and the sand goes upto about 1cm over the farm area so the foraging area is 1cm deep in sand

I've decorated it with pieces of Cork bark, a few seed casings and a few plastic plants

Colony Status: 17th August 2007
1 Queen
4 Workers (originally 7, but had a disaster lol)
6 Pups
20 Larvae
20 Eggs

Unfortunetly I over wet the sand, so I'm not expecting the colony to move out of the test tube for a week or so at least :(

Escape proofing: Have heard lots of tales about these guys getting thru anything and everything, so i've got a 3 tier defence against it, firstly I'm using Vasaline ~2cm strip around the top of the basin, secondly I've put a libral amount of Vasaline around the inside edge of the lid, so theres no way they can get thru the gaps, and thirdly the tank is sitting in tray of water, raised up, so if they get past the vasaline, they wont escape past the water...thats the plan anyway hehe. Vasaline worked very well for my Nylandri, another good escape artist, so hopefuly it will for these guys to :D

They've moved! but not into the sand lol they've moved into the large seed casing that was next to the test tube, but thats ok, coz my nu c.Herc arrived today in a very smashed box and test tube, so needed sumwhere to move her to!

;) wright on time than.

miszt: (24. Aug 2007 20:51)

Theyr on the move again :D

Was amusing to watch the confusion today, 2 workers where busy making 2 seperate tunnels, each dumping sand into one anothers tunnel! LOL! eventually they teamed up (after about an hour) and started working together, theyv made allot of progress, about 7 cm + a small chamber, between the 2 of them in one day :) am expecting the brood to move in any day now, hopefully tonight, will keep an eye out for them :D pics coming soon, definitly was a good idea to use the panaramic basin, they are intense diggers, and I recon within a year the nest will be full of tunnels and chambers :)

I'm really not having any luck with these guys :(

Today i noticed that a small bottle of washing up liquid i had stored above the tank had leaked, into the water that the basin was sitting into, didnt think much of it, untill i took the basin out to clean it and noticed that there was a tiny crack and the water + washing up liquid had seeped into the basin, and to make it worse, the crack was right underneath the tunnels they had been building :( the whole colony is dead :( except the queen, but she is not looking very healthy at all, so i've moved her into a test tube in the hope that i can revive her on a diet of hi concentration protien and honey...we'll see...

bah

JimmyVe: (9. Okt 2007 15:58)

Sorry to hear that miszt. Hope the queen will be okay.

miszt: (9. Okt 2007 17:34)

she died :( had a feeling she would, washing up liquid essentially suffocates insects if they cant clean it off properly
