Well i used a moat and i had 10 workers die within a few weeks.. Im now using PTFE and Vaseline.. not had 1 breakout.

well some ants are good at water walking but a little detergent in the water destroys the surface tension. If many are drowning it might be the sides of the farm are slippery and they're falling in. Still I'd rather lose a few workers than have them running all over the house

Jimmy.. How are your Pallidula doing now?

JimmyVe: (5. Apr 2008 15:37)

Hello Steve, they are doing great, the colony is getting very big. (don't know how much workers, but many. :) )

I know i need to take a few new pictures of them, but i haven't find the time lately.

Thats brilliant Jimmy...
Well after my first attempt at a setup for mine i have now done it again.. this time using gravel.. and ive also sealed the ytong part from the other part with a ruler and silicone...

thats cool steve, whats that brick made of?

JimmyVe: (7. Apr 2008 17:44)

Looks really nice Steve. I see you are using a bird feeder to (i use them also ;) ) may i recommend putting some cotton (ore something like that) in there so the ants can not drown ore let it flood over. ;) (bin there, done that :) )

SteveUK28: (7. Apr 2008 21:49)

lol not sure if u can see but i do have cotton wool in the end ;) and yes ive been there done that too :P

Its been a while since i updated this topic. I keep so many species that it is really hard to keep all the topics up to date. ;)
Well, this colony is doing very well. The colony is huge. (don't know how many workers but a lot ;) )
This summer they produced a lot of males and queens. Most males are dead now and some queens to, the queens that are still alive are helping the workers.
The colony is already preparing a bit for hibernation. The don't have much brood left and the queens (this colony came with 2 queens and i think they are still both alive, they are in a sand nest so i'm not sure, i don't see the queens but i suppose they are fine, i know it is a rare case for this species to have 2 queens but when they where still in tubes it worked out just fine with the 2 queens.) stopped laying eggs. So in a few weeks (half November i think) i will let them go into hibernation.
If you like to see some pictures (i know i need to update those to ;) ) you can go here .
