I find that Pheydole p. is less attracted by honey than many other ants and it is really a death trap for so small workers if not very diluted .They seems to like very much poppy seeds but I feed them mostly with killed domestic crickets or other insects and larvae from reptile shop .
Its best to give them honey (or other sweets) in a low dish, that way they can not fall into it.
Hi,
For the seeds it is maybe useful for example if you miss few days feeding them insects but they take only very small seeds even sesame seeds seems to big , so forget bird seeds.
Contrary to Tetramorium c. who harvest only what it eat Pheydole p. seems to accumulate seeds in the driest part of the nest but I do not give them much , they have just for maybe one day provision because I am afraid
they may mold in the nest
I give them only seeds destine to human (or animal ) consumption because sowing seeds may be treated I think.
Correction:
I just give them mustard seeds yesterday, they collect it but less than the poppy seeds and they put it ANYWHERE IN THE NEST even the wettest part of the nest but not in the brood chambers.
My colony does accept seeds but they don't eat them, they just carry them in there nest.
hah building material
any updates?!
