I am really in favor of using gypsum . All the best results I have had by far are in gypsum (plaster) nests .
but at two conditions : 1) The plaster must not contain any toxic additives (against mold for example ) so dentistry plaster, modeling plaster ,... is a must .Ordinary plaster buy from a "do it yourself store" do probably contain toxic substances.
2) It must be entirely enclosed in an ant proof arena , box or bassin because many ants like Pheidole ,
Tetramorium , ... can tunnel in the plaster without any difficulty .
The plaster nest permit the easy observation wile procuring ideal conditions for ground living ant colony's.
The only drawback is that a nest occupy for one year or so have to be replaced and the ants relocated .The old nest have often to be throw away or at best thoroughly cleaned and disinfected , but any way any nest can become dirty with time.
Using sand-loam mix and a plaster plaster nest are not mutually exclusive .

thanks very much, in the end I did have to move them and they are now thriving in a sand-loam nest
100-150 workers
50 soldiers
an some larvae and the queen

I have a small gypsum nest that I was hoping to keep some Pheidole's in? Is this ok, or should I go for another .spec that will not chew through, surely they wouldent chew through the gypsum, Just make it there home.
If this is a BIG problem, could anyone please tell me a small .spec with soliders that can stay at room temp (uk) like the Pheidole's :)

Thanks

Edward :D

nah should be fine, just put it in a tank. ;)

Thanks

This is not really the thing I was looking for because I have bought http://antstore.net/shop/product_info.php/info/p742_gypsum-nest-6-1-chambers.html
I thought due to its small size it would be perfect for Pheidoles, But now I'm not so sure after reading this post ): The nest is too small to put a test tube in, and has glass on the top that can be removed, so, if possible, How could I get the ants inside with out tipping them in (if possible) because I know brood will be lost if I do so ): + I want to keep it out of a tank so that is can be observed easy.

Thanks again

Edward :D

easy, just put is in a tank with substrate around it so its flush with the plaster, don't make it so they can dig in it, then remove the smaller bit of glass and cover the nest area with a piece of wood over it to make it dark.

AntsEng: Re: What is the best nest for Pheidole pallidula? (15. Sep 2012 21:35)

Thanks for the fast reply!

So If I put the nest in a Tank and make the substrate the same level as the nest but the can not dig through the substrate? Keep the nest dark and moist + warm so that they will want to move into there?
+ If fed well, after how long will I start to see soliders?
I also looked on the antstore today and they are out of Pheidole's So if someone could send me some and workers I would be very gratefull (: Please p.m me if you have any that you are willing to send, I will pay?
Just like the Antstore its self (: 18.90 Eu for Queen (or 2) 51-100 Workers? Or less £15.30 If anyone has only a queen and few workers will be gratefull for even that, Can work out price :)
Just wondering, I have heard that they can live at room temp then kept in a unheated room in winter ? Is this true or will I need a heating mat?

Thanks

Edward

yes to the first question.
you will see soldiers at around 50 workers.
I sold my colony ages ago.
the temp is perfect at 25-30C, but lower temps are fine, hibernation is about 15C.
