where abouts did you get your Devil's Coach Horse ? looks nice, guessing it eats ants though
you find in the garden they are very common, they will eat anything but ants are abit small would be like a t-rex eating a hamster
I agree that aphids probably won't work in the house. I had an aphid colony growing on some mint inside. The mint was growing in a filter I built for my aquarium so I couldn't use any pesticide. I observed the aphid colony regularly. After a while I noticed a few parasitic wasps around and within a couple of weeks - no more aphids. I think the problem with artificial ecosystems is that they are usually too small, so you get no predation... then complete predation and consequently population explosions and crashes. In nature this is spread out much more, so while it's happening in one place, other nearby areas are at different stages of the cycle which allows stability overall.
With regards to animals that live with ants, this is definitely possible. When I was younger, I collected colonies of common ants like lasius niger and m. ruginodis. I would often find woodlice and small fast moving beetles (too fast for the ants) in the colony and these always did well. I think you might find that both are capable of eating brood, particularly eggs and tiny larvae, so it depends on how you feel about that. They don't do it all the time, so you could still have a strong colony.
On one photo is trophobiont, it´s common species(I know the Slovak name, but it´s quite common). I found this insect at species of Myrmica, Tetramorium caespitum, Lasius... quite common insect... I read about them that they are eating rubbish and old food in ant colonies...
I am getting these white insects to natural formicariums with Myrmica/Manica species , it is really good formicarium cleaner :) , if is someone interested , I can at spring sell some :D ...
which white insects?
Woodlice are crustaceans, not insects [-X As I said it's not hard to get them (they live in most of natural nests of Lasius and some other common ants), but I haven't yet found a way to persuade my ants not to kill them.
tail:
sry for as I call them "white insects" , but I am not so good in EN to call it crustaceans  ... and i wanted to write it understandly for all...
As you said , yeah other species are attacking them in formicarium , but i thought about nature terariums where is that animal in soil and eating materials what ants given out from nest - parts of insects ,dead workers , rest of cocoons etc. ... :)
of course , I saw you know about ants really a lot ,are you active to studying it ? ...

Would one of the Formica species be the best suited to this project or should i go for a different?
Skippy - it's only my little hobby :)
brightbluejacket - you can try with any species.
