Hey guys ive recieved my new myrmica rubra colony today.. 5+ queens and over 200 workers.. Very nice.. such active and aggressive ants.. im loving them.
Put them into the new setup and within minutes they was everywhere exploring... i noticed they dont seem to be brilliant climbers which is excellent cos there is now pretty much no chance of them escaping.
Gave them a meal worm and 2 crickets they seemed to be liking the meal worm more than the crickets.
Also been exploring the ytong i couldnt around 10 of them scouting it at.. an a load of them around the entrance.
Anyway more pics n info to come :D
Good luck with them dood :) looks like a nice healthy colony
The reason they like the Mealworms more than the Crickets, is coz Mealworms are very fatty, and like any animal, they seem to be drawn to unhealthy foods, dont give them mealworms to much, as they are dont have many useful nutriants until they reach the next stage before they become beetles
cheers for the advise bud :D il go hunting in the garden tomorrow for some new bugs for them..
Ohh btw if any1 is wondering what the long white thing is going into the tube.. its a bit of tissue i thought id put it there to help them.. even tho they dont seem to be using it lol..
Good luck with them Steve. Looks like i have seen that setup before. ;)
Looks very nice. Good luck with them!
Well all i can say is WOW.. that is the fastest move ive ever seen, they started moving to the ytong yesterday afternoon... this morning i checked n they are pretty much all moved in. Wish all ants would move that fast, i've had my niger since before xmas n they are still more than happy in there test tube. Anyways.. i'll be uploadin a pic or 2 of the setup later on for you guys. :D
Ok pics now added lol i couldnt wait...
@mistz.. i used the paper towel over the flash.. not to bad.. but my camera still aint that great.
ohh.. n guys do u think it needs to be more damp??
I think it is moist enough Steve. It looks really great. Your ants love it. ;)
They looks happy of the level of humidity:The larvas are spread on the ground .When it is to dry (or to damp ) the myrmicas put the larvas in high piles.
Thanks amrik, they have def done that its piled well high atm.
This afternoon i fed them 2 live crickets.. one was killed and dragged to the nest within 5 minutes by just 3 workers.. The second proved a little difficult.. he kept jumping all the time.. in the end they cornered it inside a test tube.. didnt really stand a chance then.. was swarmed by about 30 workers.. and now there aint much left of either of them, they are certainly eating the food i give them very quickly.. which can only be a good thing :D
good luck steve. i am happy when they are happy
^^
