Magicalsushi: Myrmica rubra mating flights - when? (21. Jul 2010 13:29)

I'm guessing I've already missed this year's flights, but I'd like to be prepared for next years so I'll ask before I forget...

I don't think I've ever seen a Myrmica r ubra from a reproductive caste, let alone a mated queen. Not ever. Under what conditions do they fly? I think I remember reading somewhere that they fly at night. Does anyone have any more info? How far from a nest are they likely to reach?

I read they fly between July and Aug. Maybe they have not flown yet. I came across a few nests this week in the woods and all the winged queens were still inside the nest. I have also kept a look out for them and don't think they have flown yet.
