highered: A great find (24. Apr 2009 14:31)

Two days ago I looked in the top of a Myrmica rubra nest near to where I live and I found a queen so I collected her and some workers up and when I got home I found I had collected 2 queens. How cool is that? Now I don't have to buy a Myrmica rubra colony. I know people have talked about on warm days the queen sometimes moving near to the top of the nest but I never expected to witness it like this, and this was very close to the top. No pictures as my camera can't take pictures of small ants.

It is cool, but I can beat it.

I was watching tv with the windows open when a bug flew in and landed on my head. Turns out it was a fertilized queen ant, which now has about 15 eggs.
>:D

ahhh, but what type of queen. Was it a boring Lasius niger or a cool Myrmica?

I have caught one Myrmica sp. queen and one Lasius niger queen at work (on different occasions though). The amazing thing is that I work in the forth floor in the center of Stockholm!
