Hi!
Myrmicas are not great chewers :They make theyr nest in soil or very roten wood and Myrmica rubra eat soft or relatively soft preys, theyr mandibules are made to cach preys and fighting ,not chewing .Many years ago I When I was a beginner keeping ants I did use a strong (drie)carton box as arena with scotch tape at the edge often lone ants escaped but the Myrmicas never pearsed the cardboard.

Well no fear.. i gave them a new outworld and resealed it.. no escapes now :D Also ive noticed they dont like the protein Jelly or Vitamin Jelly.. they seem to be makin a rubish pile around the peices i put in there lol Kinda tells you everything when they put it in the trash :P Crickets are still there Fav by far... I was suprised also that they like banana.. Any1 got any ideas what else i can try them with.. thats unusual.

Grasshoppers and sweets. Mine like that the most.

How do you prevent mould from growing on that type of nest due to the water?

SteveUK28: (2. Jun 2008 19:28)

i guess its cos there is plenty of air...

JimmyVe: (3. Jun 2008 21:58)

Yes, there need to be fresh air all the time. (if you place some pictures of your setup we would be able to help you with it Spore.)

Thought you guys might like an update. I've seen them bringing out a lot of white things that look like cocoons, however im now thinknig it might be whats left when the ant has been born so to speak.. am i right?

Anyway some nice new pics for you, i got 2 of them eating a cricket and 1 of a new chamber of brood.. there is now brood in 3 of the ytong chambers.

JimmyVe: (11. Jun 2008 17:54)

Nice pictures steve, could be that the white things are larvae or new born ants. (the naked ants ;) )

ashhad1: (11. Jun 2008 19:09)
