My colony also have a lot of flying males but no females
Does your colony's also produce flying females?
Some do, not sure for Myrmica rubra .
Mine also have a lot of males in the colony.
me too, just males! hey do you think we should set up a trading thing were if your colony produces just queens then someone who's colony produces males, sends you some and you send them a queen. so like every queen you send you recive 3 males, so that you can mate them and get a new colony.
@ ratgreen: ??? i'm sure you know that is (nearly) impossible to mate with ants in captivity. I'm not explaining to you because you should know it already !
Ok... this might sound a bit freaky.. but im almost sure i have just witnessed a male (trying) to mate with a queen in my new colony of myrimica.. Kiam sent them to me with males and females.. And ive out them into a smallish setup.. and the males are going around desperatly trying to get on the back of the females.. That sounds like mating behaviour to me.. What you guys think.. Il try n get some pics to show you.
@jimmyVe: well since everyone has been saying that there colony was doing some incest mating, then it sounds like it isnt that unlikely after all? i dunno im just guessing.
@steve: yer more and more common by the sounds of it, get some pics (lmao ant porn)
Incest mating in common with ants but they still need there flight. And that is why it is nearly impossible to do.
remember , a lot of colonies which you can buy from other keepers or shops , are from nature. In nature Myrmica is making big areas , where live a lot of colonies which feel like one big colony (like fire ant).
Keepers or shops which selling Myrmica , only get some your buy notice like "I want 4 queens and cca 200 workers" ... then keeper come to nature , and get it easily from this big area-colony. I am making it so too. In that big colony in nature are layed some eggs which are prepared to be fly ant , so when is keeper getting it , he getting also these eggs/larvae/pupae. So this is why are you have in colony fly ants. It will be only this year , next year I believe you will have only workers :) and first real your males/females you will have only when will be colony so big :)
Skippy
mine did not need there flight , they mated outside the nest but in vwery confined space
my males are trying to mate with the workers, there desperate, and then the workers fight back and take them out the nest.
