Eretikas: Little Myrmica rubra colony (11. Jun 2009 10:38)

Hello,
I want to show for you my colony of Myrmica rubra ants. History of whem is that year ago in my country site garden i saw strange thing.. it was a small colony marching somewhere, colony had 1 queen and maybe 40 workers. So i decided to take and keep whem.
Here you can see some pictures of little antfarm i made, but I'am thinking to make larger farm for whem as with warmer weathers they started to grow fastly.

Does anyone know how to identify age of ant queen? Or it isnt possible?

SteveUK28: Re: Little Myrmica rubra colony (15. Jun 2009 08:41)

I have to say that i do not think it is possible. But considering an ant queen can live for well over 10 years i really wouldnt worry about it.

Its possible that there is a way do to so (when the queen is dead). Yes most queens live for a few years, if they stay healty.

Hi,
As I said I was planing to set new place to live for my ants. It took longer then i expected, but finally it is done and ready to use.. ants already live in there and it seems they do fine.

Nice setup, seems like they have a lot of brood. :)

Eretikas: Re: Little Myrmica rubra colony (1. Jul 2009 09:49)

Yes, but a lot of them will be new queens and males so whey will try to leave nest for flight or some of whem will stay in nest?

JimmyVe: Re: Little Myrmica rubra colony (7. Jul 2009 22:03)

They will try to leaf the nest, but if that is not possilbe the males will die (also when they leave the nest) in a few days/weeks and the queens will stay in the nest and help out the workers or they will be killed by the workers.

Hello again,
For long time i didn't posted anything, but that doesn't mean i don't keep my ants anymore, actually i keep the same colony :)
Not so good news that since I graduated school now I'am studying at other town and i had to leave my ants to my parents for 9 months.. and yeah they weren't good keeper's :( so because of this a lot of ants died and colony became smaller, but I dedicated a lot of time this summer for my ants. Now they are growing up a bit, seems healthy with no deceases. I also tried my best at making really good house for them, well it didn't went that good, only the third seems quiet good, but it isn't really good two thing's kinda ruined thing first the strange gray, pink, yellow and even blue spots appeared in chambers (you will be able to see it on photos) and second it seems that then gypsum is drying it spreads..
Well so much about my ant's for this time :)
