if i got a colony of M essor barbarus now with just the right set up would it be best to keep them out of hibernation or hibernate them at around 15C? they would have a small heat mat and lamp :?

How big is your colony ? Its always best to give them a hibernation period. If the colony is very small you can make the period a bit shorter. (with this species)
well around 11 workers
should they be hibernated from end of november to end of january

today they moved in and here are some pics :)
5th november
they have moved in and are doing great at 29C they have pulled in to the nest:
aroung 3O seeds some spider legs the body of the spider and a pinky meaden they had a battle with the pinky meaden and on of the medias sliced it up and they are now chomping on the insides!! :D :grin:
they are thriving already!! at the max there are five workers out at one time and are busily collecting seed and sand and insects!!! :D :D :D :grin: 8)
can't wait until first mager which by the looks of things is coming queit soon :mrgreen:. so the first day has been a total sucess :P

the larvea are coming along nicely and are almoust at pupea stage 8)
they are at a very good temrature of 3OC at one end of the tank were the lamp and the heat mat are and the other end it is 25-26C :wink:

I use a heating mat for my ants in fall en spring. In summer i don't use one and in winter a let them hibernate. Nice setup.
