Nice one Shane! Very good looking coloration on the queen. Have you done any nest / foraging area modifications since you got the colony?
Yes Queen is very red for a Messor barbarus and I do wonder if she could be a new species of Messor at times.
Only a bigger nest, The foraging tank is still a small starter set A im using but still seems fine.
What an impressive colony, and such a beautiful color! Awesome job man!
Some more added photo's of colony.

Eggs larvae pupae in nest seem to be around 690 to 700+ with a mix of them with most been baby larvae in middle of the cluster.
Seems a baby boom and soon to be over 1500+ ants in this colony.
Over last months there have been at a nice balance of around 1000 with old ants dying off in there 100's as they do in week.
There garbage zone in just 3 weeks is piled high again so ready once more for a clean out.

Colony numbers are around 900 but the baby boom will be making it close to 1500+ soon 8-)

When I was a child there was a big colony of Messor ants (i think, they look very familiar) on an empty plot accross the street of my house. I used to go there and spent time watching them.
When the past day it had rained, the colony was attacking the virgin queens making them to leave the colony. I think that was a way to make them fly to <a new world> and make a new colony.
That colony was looking very strong and healthy for a lot of years. Unfortunately, a house was built there, so...
Anyway i am realy interested of starting a colony with messor ants and I would like to ask if you have any suggestions and advices.
I am thinking to purchase Messor barbarus or Messor cf. wasmanni ants. What do you think?
I think you have to buy a new arena. :D
