phers: weird behaviour (14. Jun 2007 22:41)

well i've had my colony of lasius Niger a few weeks now, there still in the test tube but i've had them under constant survilance using my webcam.

i've cut a small selection of the recorded footage because it looks weird. One of the workers appears to have grabbed a bunch of eggs and pulled them outside the nest.. then takes them back in again...

anyone got any ideas? you can see it below

That is normal. She is just trying to find a better place for the brood. Warmer, and maybe a bit more moist.

im finding it quite difficult keeping the formicarium moist.

how do you keep it moist phers ?

phers: (17. Jun 2007 18:48)

i drop water in every couple of days using a dropper.

JimmyVe: (18. Jun 2007 20:35)

you put a drop of water in to the tube ?

no they are still in the test tube they arrived in.. its still got water in the end blocked by cotton wool. I have a small container with cotton wool and water in the arena that i replace every couple of days as there drinking supply.

the vertical part of the formicarium i drop some water in every couple of days to keep it moist. i'm not spraying the arena with anything to encorage them to move into the vertical section.

Looks like you are doing it wright. So what is the problem with keeping it moist ? Is the nest to wet are to dry ? Are do you just find it to difficult to do ?

There are other ways to do it. You can put a bottle of water above the tank with a tube.... hold on, (not my picture)
