Hey.
So i decided a day ago that it was time to move these ants out of the test tube and into a nest, but as you see they have set up camp right infront of it.
Will they stay there, or can i provoke them to move, becouse its pretty dumb they dont move, since there is a myrmica rubra and a other L asius niger colony in there.
So far 2 poor Myrmica rubra scouts have been killed :(
Anyway thanks.
Putting Myrmica rubra and Lasius niger in ONE formicarium is not very clever!
And one reason for the colony, not to go into the nest could be, that the chambers are way too big and because it is not dark inside...
Yea maybe its dumb, but its also fun to see how they interact, and the basin they are in is pretty big
And they dont care if its dark or light, they have been in the light the last year.
but thanks.
Then have fun by ledding them eradicate each other...
I have to say i also think this is a daft idea.. both colonies are going to grow large.. so having them both together is just stupid... Unless your tank is like a good 6' long at least...
I have thought about it myself adding more than one colony... but if i was going to do it i would have 3 islands.. a colony on each with a small foraging area there.. and then both of them connected to a very very large central foraging area where i would place food for both colonies to hunt.. This would be more realistic than having 3 colonies in one tank..
Anyway i wish you goodluck.. Perhaps you could post a photo of your whole setup...
A Lasius niger colony I had (they are in a school project now) made a breakout invading smaller colonys of Myrmica rubra and Lasius flavus - they killd most oft them, your idea of a central area would only work, if the ant-colonys could only go in there once at a time...
The problem with Lasius niger and Myrmica rubra is that they even kill each other in nature.
Myrmica rubra have a very unefficient fighting style when you compare them to Lasius niger. So the colonies of Myrmica rubra are often killed by Lasius niger, as Markus said.
I some had a big colony of Myrmica rubra some years ago and it broke out. It nearly killed a Lasius niger colony that I had at the same table.
Those two species are very aggressiv to each other, in nature and in keeping.
Also Myrmica rubra prefers moist nests and Lasius niger prefers dry and very hot nests.
But it is possible to keep oter ants together.
Also they might live in the light but when they have a chance to get into the dark they do so. I keep some ants in the light, too, but they move as soon as they get the chance.
Update on the situation.
And i know its kinda dumb but its worked out so far, and its for scientific research.
anyways, i was looking at the tank and saw shit went down, there was a line of ants from farm 1 to farm 2.
There was no attacking just a lot of ant... shaking i think
I do agree with you both, which is why i have never attempted it. My old M. rubra escaped before and wiped out my small M. barbarus colony... so I do know just how aggresive they are.
@Antnoob... I now see how close these two colonys are.. and i cant stress to you how much i disagree and believe you should move the Myrmica rubra into their own setup. You would get much more enjoyment watching them hunt than being irradicated by the Lasius niger.
