ijsvuur: a few questions about Lasius niger (31. Aug 2010 14:46)

Hello Everyone

I have a few questions. I have a Lasius niger.

1) How is the fertilized queen again?
2) How do you catch ants? Do you specifically look for, if so how long?
3) How do you them sugar water?
4) I've read that larvae need food, they also needed in the beginning as the queen still has no workers?
5) all stages of [lagius] Lasius niger also true in the beginning? I know the workers are smaller

Thanks.

1. Larger than the rest of the ants with a larger abdomen. Make sure to catch a queen which has shed her wings or else she wont be able to start a colony.
2. Nuptial flights can occur mainly throughout summer during hot periods, usually before or after rain.
3.Soak some cotton in the sugar water so they don't drown in it or get stuck.
4.The queen will care for the first born.
5. I'm not sure what you mean.
Enjoy your ant keeping!

Thanks for your answers! I think I'm now nowing what the answer on question 5 is. I mean that ants are smaller in the begin.

Yes the ants which eclose first are called Nantics, They are small as when larvae they did not have too much protein thus less nutrients = Small ants also due to them being the first generation of workers.
