About a week ago I noticed that the Lasius nest that is coming through into my bathroom was sending winged ants through my boiler cupboard into my bathroom. They are a month too early though. Last year it was about 20-30 queens and no males. This year it is about 20-30 males and 1 queen so far.
The nest was clearly well established and is from my local area.
They can be a little to early because they live inside :).
Yes, they are probably nesting near to the boiler keeping them very warm, but why all queens last year and nearly all males this year?
That one i can not explain. ;) Anyone ?
well it could be that the colony is just moving the males ar they are taking them to a different place to take off so they avoid interbreeding i quess.
I think you're right. There are alot more males coming out now and about 4 queens. Whats interesting is that even though the queens have my whole bathroom to fly around they just seem to mainly walk around and centre around my closed window. They do not consider themselves to be on the nupital flight and so have not released the appropiate scent so no males are attracted to them.
