Well i even kept Lasius flavus and niger together as a one colony. I just gave for flavus larva from niger nest and whey where living friendlly :)
Ah, but thats like the slaves in Formica sp. Now try keeping two different queens (that are not parasites) in the same colony.
What do u mean queen parasite? Can u discribe or give a link where i could read more info :)
Well some ants (don’t know if there are any European ants like this) may live with a colony of another species, undetected, and steal brood and food from the host. This way there are two different colonies tolerating each other in the same living space, even if they don’t interact.
If you put two different territorial ants together (sharing the same tunnels etc.) they will probably fight.
Dr. Berhard Seifert tells in his book about some coexistent speciae. Cases of parasitic and, as well, non parasitic vallues occure.
It is something totaly different, they´r not slaves but wrong species brood. Slaves are something different, you call it slavery when for example Queen a) (here it could be Formica sanguinea) takes brood and workers from queen b (here it could be nearly every random Serviformica). Parasitic colony founding is when queen a) (for example Formica rufa) gets in the nest and kills queen b) and sometimes most of the workers and lives in the nest and is feeden by the workers of queen b), which die and are replaced by the workers of queen b).
In the case of Lasius niger and Lasius flavus it is NO slavery. Most of the Lasius would take random Lasius brood and some don´t kill the other spec. afterwards but sometimes they do.
Keeping them together means that you have a queen of both spec..
I checked again recently and most of the Lasius flavus have moved out, but the niger have not taken over their old nest. site.
so i added to my L asius niger kolonie some puppets of L asius flavus , and it works well . at the moment my kolonie have 30 L asius niger and 10 L asius flavus ;)
