Catualda: Formica sanguinea (4. Aug 2008 13:41)

Greetings,
As the title says im looking for people to share their experiences with this species, Formica sanguinea (and if possible some photos of their setup).

The basic idea is that im looking forward to set up a "big" formicarium for this species and have already set up the possibility to add some serviformica species later.

Thank you in advance.

I keep them for about a year now, they are doing well. The colony has about 30 workers now from which 15 are slaves. ( Formica fusca )
I keep them in a y-tong nest with a small out world (for now).
Here you can find some pictures of my colony.

i don't have any formica sanguinea workers yet

That is not a problem. If the slaves take good care of your queen and brood you will have nice workers soon.

i thought the caccons that looked like myrmica rubra cacoons were there workers but when they darkened they were all black ive got a load of eggs though

Myrmica rubra don't make cocoons :\

gabranth: (6. Aug 2008 08:13)

they do only instead of it being round its the same shape as the ants body

Oww man, every pupa is ant-shaped, and Myrmicinae don't make cocoons :\ They have naked pupae :\

gabranth: (6. Aug 2008 08:20)

nope they have a small layer of skin around them

edit: there in there final skin malt still functions like a cacoon

Hello, I have a question :)
- if I wanted to buy Formica sanguinea, can I so also buy a Formica rufibarbis, so they also have slaves? Or what shall I do, if I wanted have a few slaves, with thier own queen?
