Kale^^: Camponotus blandus (27. Aug 2008 15:28)

I've ordered a queen of camponotus blandus, she will arrive maybe next week. (I have to pay first, prob. tomorrow, can't now).

I bought a 50x35x35 tank, the queen wont be needing it at the first place, so i have good time to make a good setup before the "colony" will have workers. I would like to get some ideas what to put in the tank and what kind of nest should i put in it? Should i put a ytong-nest next to the glass (i want good visibility). Can i put sand/mould and plants in the tank or do they dig their nest there then?

I have these ants in a y-tong, they are doing really great in there. (big colony) They don't need plants or other stuff, if you put sand/loam in there they will dig and maybe even make there nest there.
Good luck with these ants.

How moist should i keep the nest? ½? ¼?
I know the following:
50-70% humid.
20-25*C @ Night↔25-30*C @ Day
I want the tank to have some nice decoration, so maybe i'll only put some granulate (preferably white, over 3mms diameter) and keep it dry so they don't nest init, and some plastic plants.

Some ideas are still welcome! :D

[I tried to give you a drawing of mine of the tank what it could be, but: "The image must be at least 0 pixels wide, 0 pixels high and at most 10 pixels wide and 10 pixels high. The submitted image is 297 pixels wide and 187 pixels high."]

10x10????

Ytong in a tank is always a good idea you can shape it too.. Then some nice fine white sand, a few platic plants.. maybe one of them air plants.. a bit of drift wood.. Would look well nice :D
Cant wait to see some pics of the setup once its done.. You could put it up in the new setup section :drink03:

Temperature and humidity seems fine. I would keep the nest about 1/4 moist. If you see they like the moist part better then the dry part you can switch to 1/3.

Should i make a small Y-tong nest before the colony gets bigger, on my experience if the nest is too big they will scrap some chambers?

JimmyVe: Re: Camponotus blandus (1. Sep 2008 22:31)

I have them now in a rather small y-tong. They keep it clean. When the colony is bigger i give them a bigger farm. ;)

I got the package on wednesday, but the blandus queen was dead. Anyway, i will be getting new one soon.
