trueviper: Correct tube/connector diameter for Camponotus spp question (6. Apr 2015 09:45)

First of all hi to everyone. I'm new to the hobby and am doing a lot of research into this subject before I start my Camponotus cruentatus colony.
As far as information is concerned, I have found this to be the best forum for a beginner like myself, the combined knowledge here is first rate!

I have purchased the below tubes and connecters which will be fine for the L.niger colony which I've just started.

antsuk.com/flexible-plastic-tubing-14-10mm-1-meter

antsuk.com/rubber-basin-connector-10mm-2-pcs

The internal diameter of the tube is 10 mm however the connecter which fits into the tube has an internal diameter of only 6/7mm.

Would this be adequate for larger species such as C.cruentatus? I'm not sure a large ant carrying a large item of food would fit through it.

They probably would, I might just be overestimating how big these ants actually are having only seen them on youtube, I just want to be sure.

I have found alternative connectors on Antstore which allow the tube to fit directly into them thus allowing a larger diameter which would be more suitable however before I commit I just want to make sure that they're needed.

Alternative connecters from Antstore- http://www.antstore.net/shop/building-market/basin-link/

I think this one might work and is reasonably priced-

So with this connecter you can use tubing at 10-16mm. Would I need to use 16mm or would 10mm be enough? What is the minimum internal tube diameter needed?

I would appreciate any insights into tube diameters as everything else I need to know has pretty much been covered by previous posts.

regards,

trueviper
