Today I decided to test my gliding material at the farm.
I'm using solid Vaseline as glide material. So I didn't knew it was working or not.
I had just put some vaseline on the wall's of the farm and tough that would be enough, Then I just saw one worker walking on the top of farm >.<

So I decided to make a full test, caught a fly, cut his wings and put it in the farm.
I made her climb the wall and noticed she barely could climb at the places with just a soft and clean layer of vaseline, but at some places (almost all ant farm) were was too much vaseline the fly could still climb it, on leg falling but she made all her way up to the top, I concluded the the waist of stick vaseline on the wall could be used as hangs to climb the wall, so instead of passing soft the sponge with vaseline on the farm wall's, I just "washed" the walls with tight passes to get a clean and uniform layer of vaseline over the ant farm.
And It just worked! The fly can't climb!

Guys your suggestion, would the liquid vaseline be better than the solid one ?

The stupid fly is living in the farm with my ants, she found and is stealing/eat my ants honey, Let's see how much time she will make it!

Hi Eman

Will the liquid vaseline dry up at one point? I would love to have an open setup, but I'm scared of using vaseline... so I will look for a really thin wire mesh on the weekend. Hopefully I can find one.

For me Vaseline is working completely well, till now no break outs ^^.

I'm keeping the formicaruim heated 4 hours day from 10:00 till 14:00, when the heaters are on the formicarium rises up to 22º around, and my house temp is around 10/15 degrees.
I'm pretending to shut down the hole heating time at the end of this month (November), so they gonna sleep for all December month and maybe January.

With the limited time warming I'm trying to give them the idea winter is coming, do you guys think it's a good procedure ?

And will my room temp's 10/15 be enough to hibernate them ? (I got some messor barbarus queens as well, will that be enough for them aswell? )

My ants just woke up some weeks ago, and the only big larvae there was hanging hole hibernation, just became pupae and then some time later disappear, defective ant I guess.
How ever there was small pile of eggs and a quite new little larvae, what is now at the moment in cocoon stage.
At the moment I have the queen (sure), 5 workers, 1 cocoon, 3 big larvae, 1 small one, and 2 big piles of eggs.

My Camponutos are loving all the fly's i drop on the front of the test tube ^^

One thing, I had some break out's with the liquid Vaseline, don't know what did go wrong, at the moment I switched to talcum what is working like a charm!
