I think it is Formica aquilonia

Shiver: Re: Boosting Camponotus (12. Jul 2011 21:43)

If I remember correctly, Formica aquilonia are very much Northern based, as in mainly Scotland... Where did you collect them, roughly ;)

ElliotHC: Re: Boosting Camponotus (12. Jul 2011 21:54)

East Sussex

ElliotHC: Re: Boosting Camponotus (12. Jul 2011 22:13)

Looks like they may be rufibarbis (Rufa?), and they are threatened.. Very cool, I will have to get down there with my macro and get some good photos.

Shiver: Re: Boosting Camponotus (12. Jul 2011 23:10)

They are not likely to be Formica aquilonia then. The only references I can find of nest sites of Formica rufibarbis in mainland UK are Chobham Common, so did you find them there? Or very close by?

ElliotHC: Re: Boosting Camponotus (13. Jul 2011 08:19)

Nowhere near there, it was near heathfield. I have found a video on the net about a colony near heathfield but this is a totally different location about 2 miles away.

I live in East Sussex, the only species I have been able to find are Lasius n iger and Lasius flavus :/
Lucky you!

ProXi: Re: Boosting Camponotus (1. Sep 2011 18:26)

It might be a Formica pratensis colony?
