they love honey. and your better off with them going in a Y-tong nest
Hello!
I am absolutely new here and just got my first ants - Camponotus herculeanus (?) queens(?)..
Now working at enclosures.. Is it OK?:
20X20X12 cm boxes, 8 cm soil/sand mix, 18X6 cm flat wood pieces from the
place where the queens were found with small holes under.. Moisture is high, sould I keep it so??
..Little water with cotton tampons.
What they need as food??
Have I missed something?
thanx
I'd recomend you keep the queens in test tubes for the first year so you can watch the colony growth and make sure they are all ok
But please dont double post ;) this is my diary thread :)
Hi John,
Hows the colony coming along? Are the queens still ok together?
I know this is a bit to late answer, but are you sure it takes 12-18 mounth to get the first workers? ( I may have miss understand something)
I found my queen one mounth ago when those were swarming, and today the first worker was born.
Sorry if my english is bad.
Only becauase of my own experience, and that of 2 of the most respected Myrmecologists in the world, I'm less convinced that you really have a worker of Camponotus herc after one month...Camponotus are some of the slowest growing species, espcially temprate species, so something is not right there...
If you do infact have a Camp herc queen, that layed an egg a month ago and now has a worker, then theres a rethink needed!
Remember Miszt it matters about the queens some queens take years while some take a few months thats how campontous herculeanus do it :)
Is there anyother species that looks very alike Ligniperda, that lives in here in northen europe? (that grows faster)

Yes, but one month is short even for Formica!

There are quite a few Camponotus species in Northern Europe, and they all look very simlar as far as Queens and first generation workers go, pherhaps Skippy can give us some info, he's kept allot of european Camp species, i'll ask him :)
Ok, i thought my queen was a C.ligniperda becouse it looks as those ive seen on pictures, when i get my new camera i can show you some picts.
ligniperda and herculaneus workers are similar, but the queens are a dead giveaway
