heres a nice one I shot a few weeks ago, sharing food :)
My herculaneus are in a sand/loam farm, they are wood ants though, and I believe the use wood chips to line the chambers of their nest. Miszt yours are in cork aren't they? Do they also have wood in the formicarium? If so what kind of wood is best? Any dead wood I find?
Hi all, hope this isnt off topic- my first worker hatched today! I realised after ordering that Camponotus herc. was abit ambitious for a first timer but it seems to be going ok. Just wondered if anyone had any advice specific to this species about when to move them out of the test tube or whether to leave them in there and let them move when they want to, or any advice generally. At the moment the queen & worker are feeding on honey water from a cotton wool bud and tending a brude of 2 pupae and about 14 eggs.
mine moved very soon after getting them, they had 8 workers at the time and are doing fine.
I would leave them in their test tube for another year Snide, because they are very timid for the first generation or two, and you wont see them out at all until you have a few workers, as a general rule, 10-20% of the colony only will be out foraging, so if you have 10 workers, you will see 1 or 2 workers out, and the rest will be in the nest, also as they are very timid, they will freeze as soon as they are disturbed, and depending on your setup they may be very hard to spot
later generations will be more bold :)
Ok, I'll let them leave the tube when they feel necessary. Thanks for the replies :)
chances are they will move given the oppertunity, i wuldnt give them the oppertunity just yet
Quick update- up to 3 workers now, have fed them from honey water on cotton, trying to find a way to get a dead insect into their tube without disrupting the queen to much. They have stuffed the empty sack that the pupae had grown in with larvea, and left the eggs outside. Really lovely looking insects, great to watch.
ok quick question- none of my 3 workers are foraging, i know they arent because the soil that blocks up the test tube is always sealed. I force a cotton bud with honey water which the queen enjoys every 2 days, but other than that there is no foraging and no food, the workers just sit around the brood tending them. Is this normal?
