zepedro: Glass (8. Feb 2012 05:51)

Hello there!

I'm thinking about staring my own ant farm with a Lasius n iger colony. Thing is I'm thinking about using an aquarium that I have no need for anymore but I don't have a lid for it.

I was wondering if there is any way to prevent the ants to climb the glass as I'd also like to keep the formicarium open :)
If this is not possible what would you advice to use as a nice lid that provides good ventilation but also prevents the ants from escaping?

By the way if you could give me some advice of what plants to use in the formicarium I'd be grateful!

Ptfe worked very good for me, had Lasius niger in an aquarium too, a big problem had been the silicone in the edges for me, I needed alot of Ptfe there but i got told that I should use talcum in the edges and ptfe on the glass .

I dont know about plants.

try maybe vaseline :D

I have vaseline on the silicone edges on mine, from about halfway up, to the top. Stops them climbing no end, didn't want it at the bottom cus it gets very messy with them carrying food around and such.

As for plants, I just have a couple air plants in there, they don't really need any looking after. I also have some plastic grass I used to have in my fish aquarium that I sometimes drop bits of food in for them to scavenge.
