OK so ive jus recieved my ant farm and nest, and now i just dont know where to start! i dont understand what sand-loam mix is or any of the terms ive read on the forums. if somebody could jus send me a good guide telling me EXACTLY how to start setting up my tank, how long to wait before releasing my ants etc i would be very very grateful!

what kind of ants do you have?
I am not the best person to tell you how to set up ant farms, but i can tell you that Sand loam mix is a type of substrate for the ants to live in or on. Some species will borrow and make a sand nest, for others it might just be in the arena area for them to walk and forage on. it really does depend to a greater or lesser degree on the species.

yeah thanks for your help, my species is L asius niger, i jus really need to know how to set up the tank initially, with my starter set i got 2 bags one with sand in it, and the other was like little pieces of rock, which do i put into the tank first? any help or pictures would be great! thanks

in the absence of anyone coming forward with advice i would search this forum, for L asius niger setup pics and threads. I am pretty sure the sand loam must be mixed and put in the nesting area, but please do look at the more experienced threads, I have never kept Lasius niger.

I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. Can you provide a link to the farm you've got? It must be on the Antstore site somewhere, right?
If you do that, I'm sure I can advise.
The little pieces of rock go on the bottom then the sand on top.. U need to have a straw or tube on one side so you can add water to the bottom granuals.
