This is how my ideal nest would look like:

The sketched version is my third version of this concept. This is how my second version looks like:

Difference between this version and the third version will be the tube at the side, which is now moved to the back of the ytong nest.
The pieces of plastic to make the ytong expandable are attached with gypsum.

I am still experimenting with this setup. During the weekend i will make the third version. If this concept proofs that it works, then i will make more nests of the same layout.
Any suggestions, advice or ideas?
your side section for allowing water to be poured in is genius! I am experimenting with different concepts too. Ill post some pictures up soon. I find that y tong is ugly, maybe adding a wire mesh section to the top would allow the moisture that builds inside to dissipate. My current set up is for a new messor barb colony and it's a sand based nest, will be interesting to see if i can incorporate a ytong section into it....
Very nice setup. I like the hole idea. :D
For these ants (i supose they are a Messor species) are you not affraid they are going to dig through the ytong ?
Yes, a bit of afraid. But with the idea that they wont dig if they have enough space and a good care i will neglect the risk.
Very nice bud.. i like this setup a lot. Perhaps you could post photos of the foraging area too...
The foraging area consist of a plastic box. I made a hole in it which is connected to the tube of the ytong nest. I use one heatmat to cover two ytong nest. The great thing about this setup is that you can place other colonies on top of the heatmat. This way you use both sides.
