thecowmaster: My first formicarium (11. Nov 2009 02:19)

Here is my first formicarium.

It is made by 2 acrylic containers, they are a vodafone (phone company) mobile containers, that I got free. Inside one of them there is a ytong block in which I made same chambers, to be the nest. The other container it will be used as out world. They are linked by a tube.

I hope the formicarium is nice :D

The ants will arrive this week.

Very nice dude, jus make sure the substrate in the outworld remains very dry otherwise they will build a nest in there too...

Don't forget to use some gliding material. To prefent ants from escaping when you feed them. (something like PTFE)

What ants are they?

I think you will find that they won't live in the ytong. Instead they will move into the soil behind the ytong block. You will have to make it moist to water the ytong. I think it would be better to remove all the soil.

lol damon.. seems im agreeing with you a lot today.. Yes i think too they might nest in that soil.. as it would be damp.. My Pheidole pallidula did the same thing..

I agree.
Another option is to separate Y-tong from the soil with glass and silicon.
You can use tea spoon to sculpture in Y-tong. Chambers will be rounder;)
