jeoff82: My DIY farm (14. Mai 2009 17:10)

Here are a couple of pics of my DIY farm I have made. It is currently holding a first year Lasius niger coloney with about 15-20 workers at the min. It only cost a few pounds to build and seems quite effective at the min.
Its made from tupperware boxes, some rubber hoses and a plastic repitile tank. Basically the main nest is in the bottom box, the middle box is for me to put freshly killed insects in and the top box contains live woodlice, millipedes, earthworms and springtails with lots of rotting wood, sand and plenty of moisture. The insects in there seem to keep it in check and I dont have any probelms with mould etc.
All boxes are connected by rubber tubes and finally they sit inside the plastic reptile tank with a little water in the bottom to stop them escaping, bit like a mini alcatraz lol. Comments welcome :D

Its not a bad setup but with this one its hard to enjoy your ants i suppose, you have not a good way to look at them. Or i'm i mistaking ?

Isn't it hard to feed them ? You always need to take the boxes out.
