Ok an update to my small rubra colony, today to my extreme suprise, i have a male drone!!!!
was so shocked as its only a colony of about 40 and assumed that only once they got v.big and comfortable would they produce winged ants.
I really hope they produce males and females which will allow me to really boost the colony if i get one or more 'knocked up' and put them back in the nest :D:D:D Antstore does say there polygyn, i assume that is the case.
ill try and get a pic of the lil guy today.
That is almost impossible. You can not mate males and queens from the same colony. Most of the colonies produce only males and another one only queens. Still if they would produce both they are not going to mate with each other. (if i'm not mistaken :) )
damn
still i hope they make a queen or too , i could always gather other males
its just i suppose ive got no chance of gettin another colony queen knocked up and introduced to mine...? suppose they will stink of another colony
lol . ants frown apon incest i guess?
yer lol, thats how they evolve, if they mated with the same family every time then there would be no variable or stronger genes which would make them more successful. it would be good if someone on this forum would be willing to trade, so you send some males, and they send a queen in return. that way you would both benefit.
Don't forget they need a nuptial flight ! They don't mate without one. And you can not force them do to one. Don't worry it is impossible to mate with your own ants. Sadly... ;)
Yes there are rare cases, but these are really rare.
chaps,
i wanted to put a different species of carpenter ant in my log nest and i see my source of ants have some Camponotus aethiops available
there on average 2mm smaller than the ligni and hercul but ant store describes them as south european and aggressive.....
can any 1 verify this? i love the aggressive nature of my rubra and want to make sure these wernt scardy cats like my ligniperda, which for there size i woulda thought would have been a bit more ballsy!
All species of ant are timid in the first few generations, this is a survival mechanism, until the colony has enough ants to be able to risk open aggression, fighting and hunting live pray...I can promise you, Camp herc and lig Majors and workers in a mature colony are a formidible ant!
cool thats nice to hear, thanks matey
makes sense too learn something new and interesting all the time about these ants!
Ill just use my spare ligni in my new log nest then
very impressive there
i saw that pick of you ligniperdas in the same tube ? but wont your ligniperda queens kill each other ? i thought they where an ant that has 1 queen only.
correct me if im wrong
In rare cases you could have more queens but when the workers come the most of the time kill one queen.
