Last night whilst feeding the ladies I noticed that the cocktail stick, shortcut from clear tube to arena floor, had got mold growing on it so I quickly replaced it with a fresh one. I hope moistening the the arena floor isn't going to cause endless problems, ie with food, I will prob replace with larger grain sand as suggested earlier, better safe than sorry.

better safe than sorry.

That is true. That is one of the reasons i'm not putting sand or anything in my new farms. And is it easier to clean this way. (but it dos not looks as nice) ;)

True true.

I notice your a big fan of the Y-Tong style nests Jimmy, I would quite like to try one of these as you can easily and clearly see what the entire colony is upto. Plus it would be alot of fun building one. :D
Azzer is kindly writting a "how to guide" on Y-Tong =D> which will be quite useful to a newbie like me.

In deed Azzers Guide is perfect. (almost ;) )
That is the reason why i like the y-tong so much, you can always look into the nest if you want, this is not possible in a sand nest. I like seeing how the ants carry of feed the larva and queen and how they live in there.

Yes, now mine have moved into the display I can't see how their all doing queen, eggs, larva or anything, apart from some workers when they are foraging. Nevermind I'm sure they'll have to dig to the edge of the display at some point.

I replaced the sand/loam in the arena for some larger grain sand today, calci-sand from Hudders T-Rex stuff £11.99 for 4.5Kg. I've obviously got bit left for future setups.
Some pics. Its good to have a white surface in the arena again.

Looks nice Sam. (are you not afraid they will dig themselves in to the sand ?)

Sam: (3. Jul 2007 10:50)

Thanks Jimmy.

Do you mean dig into the white sand (mound in the corner)? They have already moved into the display part, which is kept moist & dark \:D/ , whereas the foraging area with the new calci-sand is now kept bone dry & light, so I would hope they prefer the display. Fingers crossed.
Do you think the sand hill might look quite tempting for them?

Azzer: (3. Jul 2007 12:43)

No, you'll be fine - they can't dig in to it at all, as when it's that dry it just does not maintain any structure, so you should be quite safe!

Sam: (3. Jul 2007 16:42)

This is true Azzer. Plus its anti-bacterial, discourages fungus & mould growth, all sorts of benefits according to the packaging.
Good recommendation this calci-sand Azzer, well found. :D
