Moiser: Re: New Setup (8. Apr 2009 08:55)

Hey guys,
Just a quick update: I checked on her last night before I left the house, she seems fine. She becomes very active when I remove the bark covering the test tube. There is water and honey water in the tank, I've not seen her eat but I assume if she was hungry she'd venture out of the test tube.

How long do you guys think it will be before she starts laying eggs? I've thought about leaving her alone for a week or so and just continue changing the honey water.

Well she should have enough resources in her to keep her going untill first workers come along. Your best to just leave her be for some time. A couple of weeks id say.. The less stressed she is.. the more chance she will start laying.

As we all know, this species dont grow very fast so you need a lot of patience. :) To start from a queen only could take a while with these ants. Lets say about 2-3 months before the first workers hatch.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the advice. I'll leave her to destress for awhile, I have all the time in the world.

I have noticed she has been out of the test tube though. There was some loose fabric in the test tube when she arrived, this has been put inside the food tub so I assume she may have eaten while she was there. :)

Hey Guys,
My Queen is missing! I changed her food and water when I got home from work. I took a little peak under the bark and the test tube was empty... So I decided to search the entire tank. She's nowhere to be found. I don't know how this could of happened as everything was sealed tight! I know ants are strong but I can't see her lifting the lid to the basin. I'm completely gutted! There are some very tight gaps in the drift wood I put in the tank, could she be in there ?

Any advice at all would be apreciated.

She could be hidden in a gap in the wood, they feel safer in tight spaces. Get a torch or something and have a good look at any little crevices.
Hope you find her :? .

Hey Guys,
After posting I started tearing my house apart. After pulling the washing machine out I returned to the living room to find her crawling across the floor! I've replaced her into the basin, which to my suprise turned out to be easier than I thought. She was very lively, I've taken this as a good sign. Shes just giving herself a good clean.

I've decided to remove the drift wood from the basin for now, I've also moved the basin off the table and on to the fire place. Could anyone hazard a guess as to how this happened? I had the drift wood with me when I came into the living room so she wasn't in there. I know I've said this already but I have no idea how this could of happened? I have not applied PTFE to the basin yet as the lid is on all time. I've taken precautions by weighting down the lid and making the seal between the basin and lid better (I didn't think it was a loose fit in the first place as there were no gaps)

I'm just pleased she is ok...

Once again any advice would be appreciated.

Hey Guys,
Heres a picture of the temp set-up. Fingers crossed...

SteveUK28: Re: New Setup (10. Apr 2009 12:39)

Glad u found her mate.. This is one of those reasons why she should be just left alone lol.. If i was you thought id seal her test tube put her somewhere dark.. and then Put a good 2" layer of PTFE all around that tank.. Just to be sure.. then place her back in.. id also get a heat mat.. just to speed things up a little :) Good luck with her and i hope she makes you a lovely colony :)

Moiser: Re: New Setup (10. Apr 2009 14:49)

Yeah it was a challenging time! I have a heat mat already so I'm all good there, I have the temp set to 25 in the day and 22 in the evening. I'll have a think about plugging the test tube but I would be worried she might starve or dehydrate?

I'm at work right now so there is a chance she could of escaped by the time I get home! I still can't think of how she managed to get out the first time!
