They are not really for beginners (very stressful, sure if you only have a queen) but i think you already have some experience, not ? How long do you keep ants ?
They are not that difficult only it would be nice if you have had another species first.
They need heating, keep a shorter hibernation and can chew trough y-tong.
I didn't want to start a new topic so I hope you guys don't mind me posting in some old topic.
I put my Messor barbarus colony out of the hibernation, which lasted about 3 months, few days ago and I guess I owe some people some photos. :wink:
First of all, my antfarm is not something you often see around here, just something temporary I guess. You can berate me later.
wow mpir im well impressed with ur pics.. i do really like these ants.. i hope my queen comes along this spring :D
wow i love the Major shots. cant wait until my Messors have Majors :) :D
mpir how did u make the holes in the icecream tubs.. did u melt them??
@SteveUK28
Quite easy, actually. I heated up the end of the glass test tube over the fire. Then I just pushed it into the plastic and it melts away. The plastic tube conecting the two boxes is the same size as the glass tube used for making hole... so it is a perfect snug fit.
@kashmir79
The majors are great. They are walking around like bulldogs and like they mean business. :D It took forever for them to hatch. Much longer than the normal worker. But it was worth the wait. :wink:
mmm i might just try out a simular setup :D
fantastic indeed, i cannot wait for my ants to wake up, though i was a little late in hibernating them, so i guess il leave them till march time...
how many days then for the Majors ?
cheers :D
First major appeared in my colony when it was about 70 ants strong. How long it took from egg to worker I can't really say as I only realized that I'm getting a major about half way through. But I can say that the last stage - pupa - took more then a month. :?
