Saw this article today, if ever there was a reason not to release your lasius niger into the garden this is it, you never know what you might be letting loose
WOW.
that's a bit of ant news isnt it ;) Im too sure they won't be the only ones in UK.
i saw this too, cool ants, I want some. But they depend on aphid nectar so probably hard to keep. I wonder what the scientific reason is for them prioritising electricity above food and water?
When it says they depend on aphid nectar, I wouldn't take it too seriously. The mass media isn't very accurate when it comes to information about ants. Also, aphid nectar would probably make up a significant proportion of Lasis niger/flavus diets.
The attraction to electro magnetic fields won't be a survival strategy. The didn't evolve in an environment that contained strong localised electro magnetic fields, so it is far more likely that it is an side-effect of a positive evolutionary strategy. A bit like the way moths end up spiralling into light sources because they use the moon (which is very far away) as a navigational aid to help them fly in a straight line. Because of the distance, if the moth maintains an angle steady to to the moon, it will fly in a straight line.
That is in deed one of the biggest reason for not letting exotic ants free into nature.
The reason they like the electricity is because of the magnetic induced heat coming from the cables, it heats up the brood and provides a better environment.
but only if its alternating current. direct current does not induce electricity.
