Wildbird: Help to identify please (6. Sep 2007 22:33)

Hi All

This ant jumped me as I got out of my car, has wings so is either a king or a queen, Dark orange in colour so I am suspecting Lasious Flavus,

2 questions really, Boy or girl and impregnated or not, after 10 hours still has wings attached so I don't know

Any thoughts, or any idea how i'll be able to tell

Thanks as always

Paul

Based on the head in proportion with the abdomen, and the clubbed antennae I would say it is not Lasius flavus. I would guess a Myrmica or similar looking species of some sort.

A side view would be helpful if you could provide one.

This picture is not really clear, do you have a better one ? ;)

Guessing it is a queen, male heads are smaller. Still wings, could be she is not fertilized.

Where have you found it?

It's a queen. I think, but not sure, it's a Chyphomyrmex. The aspect is very similar...

Chyphomyrmex (?) , I dont know about this ant specie :(

I think it is Myrmecinae and probably some Myrmica , dont know about other ant specie in UK which looking else ;) from Myrmecinae class , so probably I Guessing it is Myrmica (it is not L. flavus)

Oh, you're raight!
I've exchanged the English flag for that USA... :?
then I agree with you, however the the head aspect is strange...

Steve you need to look at the date Wildbird posted it. ;)
He find the queen in September (late summer) so that would make it possible.
