pphakkar: Can you help me with this one (11. Mai 2007 15:38)

Hi

I captured two ants but I could use some help with identifying them: pictures , 8 . I'm sorry about the quality but that's best I can do.

The color or ants is about: black head, dark brown middle body, lighter brown bottom. It is about 6 mm long.

They are Finnish ants and other have said that they could be Myrmica, Leptothorax tai Temnothorax

If it is a queen 6mm is to short for a Myrmica spec. but she looks like one.

Maybe if you have some better pictures.

I suppose its a Myrmica sp. queen, the lenght is comparable with e.g. Myrmica rubra of 6,5-7,5 mm, and the whole body doesn't looks like one of a Leptothorax queen.

On the 2nd picture you see little stings (spikes) at the end of the Thorax.
That is a special characteristic feature for the Myrmica, Leptothorax pecies and other species of the genus Myrmicinii.
Manica rubida (the only species of the Manica-gruop which lives in europe) doesn't has this spikes.

It sure looks like same like thos Myrmica Rubra queens in your link. That is common in Finland. I would be quite sure with this one.

Thank you all very much.
