mtrein: Pachycondyla? (9. Okt 2011 18:11)

Hi,

I believe i have captured a Pachycondila ( I will post pictures in the identify section later). Is it possible that this worker can become a queen?

I like Pachycondyla. Can you upload the photo? :sign_welcome:

In some species of Pachycondyla there can be gamergates. But there are very few species that can have such a gamergate (mated worker) and I do not belive that you cought such a Pachycondyla.

It's shitty to upload via iphone, I should get home in about 3 hours and I'll upload half a dozen pictures. I'm almost sure it is Pachycondyla apicalis by other pictures in this forum. What I have not been able to confirm is whether I will be able to start a colony with it.

wow so let's hope the ants are nice but will not get ant from a colony

So, will I be able to start a colony with it, do you think?

baumarkthammer: Re: Pachycondyla (9. Okt 2011 22:41)

That is not a Pachycondyla apicalis.
Pachycondyla apicalis has a different body shape and the easiest way to tell it apart from the most other ants is that Pachycondyla apicalis has yellow antennae ends.

I can´t identify this ant.

Thanks, baumarkthammer

Just to add more information for helping identifying this species: It measures a bit more than 20mm.

It might be a Diacamma

Looks very similar, especially the "bump" at the end before the abdomen

Uploaded some better pictures I took this morning, and a short video as well.
