For sure they aren't the same species as African or European ones. Actually many South American species aren't even well described. Most people here are from Europe, so we don't know Brazilian fauna, though the genus can be usually identified, as all Pheidole or Camponotus look quite similar. So you can call them "Pheidole sp." and "Camponotus sp." For ant keeping, this should be enougn. If you want exact identification to the species level, probably you should ask a local entomologist.

I would go from Camponotus sp. and it could be Camponotus nigriceps .

And this one??? I looked in the shop to see if I could find some specie close to this, but there's not.

Hard to tell mate, picture is rather small. i'm thinking a Formica or a Camponotus species. :)

For sure not Formica, this genus is characteristic to northern hemisphere and relatively cold climate.

Okay, much better. ;) (thanks Melk)
You are right tail, didn't think off that.
Well than i would go for Camponotus species, most common ants where you live i think. ;)

SirHiob: Re: Identification, Bitte! ;^) (3. Mär 2009 22:06)
