russell: Tetraponera rufonigra not eating (22. Sep 2012 00:07)

Hi,
I' ve just bought a small colony of Tetraponera rufonigra .
I' ve put them in there vivarium but they.
A ren ' t taking any food I have tried all sorts,
like waxworms crickets and mealworms.
but they arent paying any attention to it.
I' ve tried both dead and alive.
Is this because they havent settled in
yet and are recovering from the move?

T hanks

How long do you have the colony and in what nest are they in at the moment?

I always heared that Tetraponera rufonigra eat very much and nearly every sort of insect, even other ants.
However I do not belive that they will consume any mealworms or waxworms since it is untipical for such an type of ant to eat those insects.
You might even try brood from other ants.

Also maybe they don´t have any brood and don´t need any proteins at the moment.

hi
thanks for the reply
i got them 2 days ago they were in a very small tank less than 30cm long and 15cm high
they also had no things to climb on just sand
the tank i have put them in is nearly 3 foot long 2 foot talk and 1 foot deep
when i put them in the tank i put them in a bark nest that i made my self sitting
at the top of the vivarium but the next morning they had all moved including
the eggs and queen
at first i thought they had escaped but they have nested on the floor under the
large mangrove roots in there
theres about 10 workers and and about 10-15 eggs all in different stages
i keep seeing them drinking but they ignore every bit of food i have tried
they just turn around and walk away (dead and alive)
i will take some pics and post them so you can see the tank etc

cheers
