Are you feeding them? I over feed mine just so they don´t eat egg/larva.

abzantz01: Re: Pogonomyrmex info needed (22. Dez 2011 01:00)

Hi guys I just want to say thank you all for the advise in the past on keeping ants. It seemed I was rubbish at keeping ants. To be honest I had finished the hobby until I found a great offer, which was my Pogonomyrmex queen. So I got her In August. I found great advise from a number of people (AntChrist) lol :D and have finally managed to get out of the founding stage. Anyway 10 days ago I updated the colony saying they had eggs and that's all. So now 10 days on the colony have around 5 larvae, 3 being nearly adult size and a couple small ones and some eggs. It seems the colony has started to grow faster now. I thank God for giving me patience with ants and finally giving me the only species I can keep. :) So now I have grown allot and have tried to fix my spelling issue and grown patience, my colony is finally growing.

As of always pictures:

They have now got a small area to feed from. It have a very thin layer of sand inside. The testube is inside a new sock with tape around it. Even though I only have 2 workers they eat alot and there is always 1 worker out looking for food. They exept any insect I put in. They have not eatten any seeds yet.

Antchrist: Re: Pogonomyrmex info needed (22. Dez 2011 10:17)

Think of this: The Pogonomyrmex aka Pogos grows slow first and then they will grow much faster. You are going to need a bigger formicarium if all goes well. Start that project now...

I don´t know what kind of seeds you are feeding them but try many different kinds (grass seads).

Keep feeding them, give them "heat" (25C), and moist and they will be OK.

Just so you know it, we have all failed a few times with our ants..part of the hobby..

Hi guys got a little bad news. I found a mite in the ants tank today it was on one of the grass seeds. I have now taken the ants out and have had a look in there testube and can not see any in there. I am going to cook then freeze the sand and wash the tank then hopefuly put the ants back in thier tank tomorrow. I am on holidays now, so I am thinking of making the ant project. The thing is isn't it a bit to soon to make them a permenent home. Their is only 2 workers?

Antchrist: Re: Pogonomyrmex info needed (23. Dez 2011 23:22)

Never too soon. Start building and move the ants when THEY are redy.

Cook AND freeze = overkill...

abzantz01: Re: Pogonomyrmex info needed (24. Dez 2011 00:15)

I know it was over kill lol. Well I have been thinking about making their tank. I will this 2 gallon tank.

I think it is a bit big. What do you think?

Any way Can you post a recent picture of your colony up to date. I would love to see them in their set up. I have read the thread of the making of your colony's home but the pictures do not work in google translator. So can you do a brief explanation here?

That would be great.

Also have you got any tips on looking after there guys for the coming months. You told me how to look after the queen in founding stage. I would like to know how to keep the queen after she has had her first couple of workers?

Thankyou

Abz

I have some great pictures for tomorrow of the pogos! :)

Antchrist: Re: Pogonomyrmex info needed (24. Dez 2011 10:17)

I had one exact the same for my Pogonomyrmex (as an start up box).
They escapes through the holes in the lid. Trust me they will....

Keep the food (bugs) coming, keep it moist, get rid of all un eaten food, dont bother them to much, try many different kind of food, read all there is about your ants on the net, have a lot to do for the ants in the formicarium (climb, hunt, explore, dig, find).

The whole idea with the "un translateble thred" is that if anything breaks down in the formicarium I could change it with out opening the formicarium and that it should look something like how it looks where Pogos live...

abzantz01: Re: Pogonomyrmex info needed (29. Dez 2011 01:11)
