i have heard that Myrmica Rubra only have small nests of about 250-300 workers in the wild is this ture.
Thanks

No that is not true. They can have up to 20.000 workers in a single colony.

hey,
some years ago I receaved some numbers of "insectes socaux"and there is an article of M.C.Cammaerts in1977 on the demography of colonys of Myrmica rubra in Brussels area : 1)the size of the worker population is NOT directly releted to the number of queens (one colony with 8 queens had 5.127 workers . an other with 2.561 had 97 Queens! )
2) the average population size (missing maybe the very small colonys) was workers 1904
3) 2 very big colonys had abit more than 5000 workers ... 7 big colonys between 2000 and 3600... 9 between
1000 and2000 w...and 7 between 400 and1000 .smaller colonys were not detected maybe because they are rarer.
4) 2 colonys with one queen had respectively 488 and 720 workers
I think than when the colony reach 3000or 5000 workers it lost its cohesion , emigrate to two differents winter nests, acquire differents smells and so split .

G.W.Elms the ile of Purbeck Dorset in a cold ,low ant desity area study colonys of M.rubra found anaverage of1,176 workers/colonyall poligynes with the biggest colony having 2,980 w .
Myrmica sabulety had an average of1566 w at the same location with an average of 3 or 4 queens but in an another location (Hartland Moor)only 523 w with the majority of colonys monogyne.
M.scrabrinodis seems to be monogynes in some area oligogyne in others:one queen colonys average288 w .3 or 4 queens one 1210

JimmyVe: (2. Jul 2008 14:23)

@ Steve: No i don't, i know sometimes ants drown in it but i must say i'm lucky with that. It don't happen very often. ;) And this way the ants like it better than when i put cotton wool in it.

KjeldWie: Re: Foto's Myrmica rubra (30. Aug 2009 10:42)
