Looks good Jimmy :D .

My Messor Barbarus nest is doing good :D .
They only eat seeds at the moment. And they got more than 20 workers. One of the workes have a big head and i think (not sure becouse they get crazy when light comes inside of the nest) think it's an Major.

You can recognize the majors on there red heads. Don't you feed them insects to ? (they should have some).

thomie: (8. Jul 2008 08:21)

I gave them insects preveous week (for the second time).
They ate the insects really fast so i gave them more insects.

I thought they where able to grow on only seeds and wather (like birds :P ) becouse they didn't took an insect i gave them at the beginning of the nest.

Now i habe an electric fly catcher so i'm running around the house catching flies ;) it goes really easy (H) .

I hope my first Major will hatch soon but not sure of that... The colony have 8 larvas at the moment, but not really big ones. The colony counts ±24 workers and when i have holliday i'm going to make a good nest for them (they live in the dark atm).

A lot of people think that, but that is not true, they need insects to.

The colony is doing great: expanding really fast, the baby boom have started  .

They've got about 300 workers. And almost 1 test tube full of breed.
The majors are also growing. The first major was a little larger than an worker. But the new majors are almost 2 times the size of an normal worker!

I give the colony grass and bird seeds. At the moment they only eat grass seeds, I guess they're easier to eat than the grass seeds. I also give them some insects, but not plenty of them. It's much easier to give them seeds and they seem to do fine on them. I give them about 1 insect a week.

They house in 3 test tubes and use 1 small test tube for storing seeds. Seeds are also stored a few long rooms. They've dug many roads and rooms in the (dry) sand. The Queen usually houses in the centre of the sand basin.

The outside world is used for dropping sand. The peace's of sand become bigger and bigger (±4mm), guess that's the work of the Majors.

Messor Barbarus was in the beginning an little bit boring. They are really fearful. With the smallest vibrations (an door being closed hard) they start running towards the nest. luckily they became braver with the growing of the colony.

Overall Messor barbarus is an really nice specie. At the start it is more work than Lasius Niger because of the heated formicarium. Y-tong is not an option because they're able to dig truth it (heard stories about 5cm in one night) They also demand an higher habitat level than Lasius Niger. Feeding M essor barbarus is
easier than L asius n iger because seeds are easy to buy and store. They are more more sensitive for light and vibrations. I recommend starting with an larger colony (at least a few workers). Because they are sensitive the Queen frequently eats her breed during transport. When there workers it'll be much easier for the Queen to lay new breed since she have more energy.
