i have recently bought a Myrmrica rubra queen which came with about 25 workers. they seemed to settle quite quickly into their home which is a 3x1x1 ft fish tank.Is this suitable? i was told they were quite active but i havnt seen much of them since i got them. only 1 or 2 occasionally walking around. is this normal? how do i know if the queens ok? i leave dead insects but they never get eaten. is was only today when i put some suger water in there that they all started coming out. Is the lack of acticvity due the colony being so small still? there were quite a few eggs when they arrived. how long should i expect to wait before i start seeing a bit more life?
one other thing. i disturbed them a few days ago. i lifted up a piece of wood that i put in there to see if i could see them and they were all there, even the queen i think but now they have gone. is this because i disturbed them? will they be ok?
there are only 25 workers so it is normal that you don't see many foragers.most of the workers will be taking care of the queen and brood or building the new nest.only a small numbers become foragers and look for food.if there are no larvae they won't need many insects.
Welcome to our forum, like sobek already said its good to have an arena for the colonie. Besides make sure they can´t run away.
