Hi everyone, last week I caught an Amblyopone queen =P~ and after much trial and error I was able to find her a suitable food mixture that she will eat until she lays eggs and hatches her first workers. Here is a picture of the queen right now. I thought I'd start a topic concerning an Amblyopone queen for others to follow. I will update occasionally. The mixture she eats (and I've noticed that almost all ant species that I keep have accepted this kind of diet, although protein intake is rationed amongst different species):

1 egg yolk + 1 bottle cap of honey + 1 bottle cap of water. Mix it all together, add a bit of water and you will get a creamy canary yellow color. It shouldn't be too deep of a yellow or too light of a yellow.

Wishing my queen good luck!

Where did you catch a Amblyopone queen?
Your profile says you live in England. There aren´t any Amblyopone species in england as far as I know.

Apologies, baumarkthammer. I believe Ambylopone could perhaps occur in England. This one is from Canada.

Still no update on the Amblyopone, she hasn't laid eggs yet. Perhaps waiting until the spring. I will update when something occurs!

Queen is still alive and well and eating, but no eggs. I've been researching and I don't believe that I'm doing anything wrong. Perhaps she will lay in the spring so I will update when I have something to update! Cheers all.

Update:

Next week I'll be taking the queen out of hibernation. This will be a first-time attempt at raising this species so please do not get too disappointed if it ends up failing.

Regards
Vas

This is strictly subterrestrial ant and you keep her like normal Formiciane or what.. wtf?! She need soil, substrate, leaf-leatter to dig and move in it, not empty air/space in tube..
Do you still have her, is she allive? Their nutrion is composite from proteins, not sugar watter, but your egg mixture is ok. Feeding with some dead Colembolla or worms Enchytraea will be fine too, and also dead Drosophila or mosquitos or fly´s heads are very good food for these primitive ants :)

She was kept in a test tube filled with sand, loam and some peat. She did lay eggs and they did hatch but unfortunately she died. The queen lasted in my set up for a good 8 months, I think I did something right ;)

I wish I knew about the fly heads beforehand! If I find another queen this september I'll make sure to try that out! Thanks!
